The Rise of Sin Tzu is simple and straight forward. Free of plot holes or loopholes. Commence the battle at the earliest opportunity. Even though you’ll see enemies on the screen in great numbers, you will face them on a wave by wave basis.
This feeling is quite reminiscent of old arcade games, where reflexes and hand timing are more important than long-term strategy. After playing for a while, I realized the game doesn’t require overly complex combos.
The feeling of fatigue appears quite early, especially in later levels. The enemies are more numerous, more resilient, and often attack simultaneously from multiple directions. But this fatigue creates a very distinctive feeling of classic beat ’em up. You don’t have much time to think. As soon as one wave is over, another comes crashing down.
Many familiar characters
A rather interesting point is that the game doesn’t just revolve around Batman. You can choose Robin, Nightwing, or Batgirl, and each character truly offers a different gameplay experience, not just a change of skin. When I first started, I chose Batman for safety. The attacks are solid, medium-range, and easy to get used to. But when you switch to Nightwing, the game’s pace changes completely. Attacks are faster, movement is more agile, but you’re also more vulnerable to damage.
This feeling arises because the game doesn’t balance the characters in a way that makes everyone the same. Each character has clear strengths and weaknesses. Batgirl is fast but a bit fragile. Robin is agile but her attack range isn’t wide. After playing for a while, you’ll choose the character that suits you best, rather than the strongest one.
In later levels, character selection significantly impacts the difficulty. Some levels feel fine playing Batman, but switching to a different character becomes much more challenging. This gives the game replay value, as simply changing characters changes the feel of the entire level. For a linear beat ’em up game, this is a considerable plus.
The Dark Gotham atmosphere
Rise of Sin Tzu isn’t a deeply narrative game. It has a storyline, but it’s quite concise. However, the Batman feel is still very strong. The dark colors, the street environments, factories, criminal bases… everything perfectly captures the essence of Gotham. After playing for a while, I realized the game doesn’t need a lot of dialogue to create atmosphere. The scene setting and background music are enough.
This feeling arises because the game understands what it’s doing. It doesn’t try to be a complicated Batman game. It just wants you to feel like you’re cleaning up Gotham with your fists. The background music is quite repetitive, but it suits the continuous fighting rhythm. Listening for a long time isn’t too annoying, it’s more like a drumbeat keeping your hands from slowing down.
In later levels, when the enemies are stronger and the atmosphere is more tense, this dark feeling becomes even more pronounced. Although the graphics are no longer as impressive by current standards, the Batman atmosphere is still enough to keep players engaged until the end. And for a classic action game, that’s enough to fulfill its role.
Bosses and increasing difficulty
One thing I noticed quite clearly while playing Rise of Sin Tzu is how the game builds its bosses and increases difficulty in a very straightforward way. There aren’t many layers of complex mechanics or subtle patterns. Bosses are usually tough, hit hard, have a wide attack range, and force you to learn how to dodge instead of just charging in and pressing buttons.
After playing for a while, I realized the game doesn’t want you to win by mastering the strategy on the first try. You usually lose once or twice before you start to understand where to stand and when to attack. This feeling arises because the game isn’t gentle with the player. In later stages, the enemy’s health increases significantly, and they can withstand more hits, while your character doesn’t get much stronger.
